3 Stage House

The 3 stage house is a masterplanned staged dwelling that increases in floor area over time as the needs of the occupants change. The first stage can be conceptually likened to a caravan, providing the young owners with the minimum living requirements needed when starting out. The brief requested an interesting and unique house constructed on a tight budget. The result was a clever use of high raked ceilings in a tight space to create a lofty open plan living area, which sprawled onto a north facing deck and harnessed significant creek/tree views.

Stage 2 (currently under construction) involved the design of a large covered deck, which would effectively double the usable living area and cater for the occupants growing family and love of outdoor entertaining. The covered deck acts as an ‘anchor’ between the two wings (stage 1 & 3) and brings the separate zones together in one central, useable, private space.

Stage 3 (currently at documentation) involves the provision of a third bedroom, second ¬†bathroom and a new open plan, kitchen, dining, living zone, which will replace the previous living zone as the ‘main’ living area. The former living area (first stage) is partially infilled and becomes a children’s rumpus/wing. The two wings function independently, when oversized sliding doors at either end of a glazed covered link-way are closed, creating a sense of privacy in each wing as the young family grows.

North facing double glazing and solar passive first principles were utilised throughout the design, to create a usable, comfortable and energy efficient home.
